Iran-backed Houthi forces have seized Yemen’s strategic port city of Mokha after days of fighting with Saudi-backed forces. Yemeni troops were forced to withdraw after suffering heavy casualties, giving the Houthis control of another key point on the Red Sea coast close to the Bab Al Mandeb shipping route.
Pakistan has hit back at criticism that it is failing to defend Saudi Arabia from escalating Houthi attacks, insisting it will act under the Mecca defence pact “when the time comes.” Islamabad says no military response is currently under discussion, despite the pact stating that an attack on Pakistan, Saudi Arabia or Turkey is considered an attack on all three. Pakistan has meanwhile warned Iran to rein in its Houthi allies.

Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party is accusing Palestinian political figure Mohammed Dahlan of foreign interference in Israel’s election, claiming he was behind a disputed Haaretz report alleging that the UAE warned Netanyahu ahead of October 7th. Likud says Dahlan is seeking to weaken Netanyahu as he pursues his own ambitions in Gaza, and is demanding a criminal investigation into alleged foreign involvement.
The UN nuclear watchdog has closed its nearly two-decade investigation into Syria’s undeclared nuclear programme, citing cooperation from the country’s new government. But the IAEA is taking the opposite approach with Iran — referring Tehran to the UN Security Council over nuclear non-compliance, the first such move in 20 years.
And as Israel’s relations with some traditional European allies deteriorate, it is strengthening ties elsewhere. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar has opened Israel’s first embassy in Slovenia.
