Israel’s former prime minister Naftali Bennett says Qatar and Turkey should be pushed out of Gaza and Egypt brought in to help disarm Hamas. Former Israeli ambassador to the United States and former deputy foreign minister Danny Ayalon joins Israel in Ten to discuss whether Cairo can really be trusted to play that role.
Meanwhile, tensions between Israel and Turkey are rising sharply after Israel struck Syria’s Abu Duhur airbase. Jerusalem says it acted after repeatedly warning Damascus against allowing a Turkish military presence there. Turkey denies its troops were deployed and has accused Israel of threatening regional stability, while Syria says there was no Turkish military build-up and insists it remains open to a security agreement with Israel.
President Trump is threatening sweeping economic consequences against any country that assists Iran, warning that banks, businesses or airports providing Tehran with a “lifeline” could face unprecedented economic pressure. The threat could have major implications for China, which buys more than 80 percent of Iran’s exported oil. The UAE has already suspended trade and financial transactions with Iran.
An Iranian lawmaker has called for Tehran to withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in response to Trump’s escalating economic campaign. Ebrahim Rezaei says leaving the NPT would be the “best response” to Washington’s pressure.
Yesterday we learned that Israel has only now stopped selling defense systems indirectly to Qatar. Today, security officials are warning about the IDF’s widespread use of Chinese-made drones on the battlefield, saying they could expose troop locations and sensitive operational information. Elite units reportedly avoid Chinese technology over security concerns.
And Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar has hit back at Britain after new Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband threatened fresh sanctions over Israeli settlement expansion. Miliband has demanded Israel halt the E1 project east of Jerusalem, while Sa’ar accused London of a “patronizing” approach and insisted Jews have the right to live throughout the Land of Israel.
